Profile of Professor Joseph Owolabi Ajayi

Professor Joseph Owolabi Ajayi was born on 7th April 1951 in Ibadan, Nigeria. He graduated from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Geology (1972); obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Groundwater Research from the Groundwater Research Centre of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel (1973); an MS degree in Hydrology (1976) and a PhD in Water Resources Administration (1982) from the University of Arizona, Tucson, USA. He spent a post-doctoral period as a Research Specialist, at the Caribbean Research Institute of the College (now University) of the Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands and Assistant Director of the US Virgin Islands Coastal Zone Management Program (USVI-CZMP) in 1983-84. He is a Professor in the Department of Geology of OAU. Currently he is the Chairman of the Nigerian National Committee of UNESCO – International Hydrological Programme (UNESCO-IHP). Since 2015 he has served as a member of the Independent Advisory Group (IAG) of the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP), a World Bank assisted project to alleviate flooding in Ibadan Metropolis.

Dr. Dogara Bashir is the Executive Chairman, Kaduna State Water Services Regulatory Commission, Kaduna State, Nigeria. He obtained his first and second degrees in Agricultural Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria in 1978 and 1982 respectively and his Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, U.S.A. in 1989. After his National Service in 1979, he was employed as a Lecturer by Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto where he worked up to 2001. He transferred his services to the National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna, Nigeria where he rose to become the Director in charge of research and technical services. While at the Institute, he was also the founding Director of the Regional Centre for Integrated River Basin Management, a Category 2 UNESCO Water Centre. In January, 2017 he was granted leave of absence from the Institute to enable him take up the appointment with Kaduna State Government to establish the State Water Services Regulatory Commission.

 

Dr. Bashir has taught a number of courses in the agricultural engineering discipline, mostly in soil and water management and had conducted and participated in a wide range of research activities in the general areas of water resources management and environmental protection. He has published 42 papers in various journals and reviewed proceedings and has attended and presented over 90 papers in various conferences, seminars and workshops both in Nigeria and elsewhere. He has supervised over 30 degree projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, examined many postgraduate (Ph.D and M.Sc.) candidates, had been external examiner to three universities and two polytechnics and was editor of a number of technical journals.

 

Dr. Bashir has had professional experiences in many water and environment related areas including; water resources planning, environmental protection and sustainable development, renewable energy development, desertification control and poverty alleviation strategies, institutional assessment for capacity development, etc. He has also involved himself in a number of activities to promote understanding, partnership and development. He is an executive member of three NGOs, a member of two Boards of Trustees (one of which he chaired), National Secretary of a professional NGO and a Steering Committee member of two NGOs (one national and one international).

Engr. Prof. Constantine Crowner MBAJIORGU, FNIAE, FNAHS

Born at Enugu, Nigeria on 19 May 1957, Prof C C Mbajiorgu hails from Umueze Village in Ihiala, Ihiala LGA of Anambra State, Nigeria. He attended

(1) St Patrick’s Primary School, Ogbete, Enugu where he undertook the First School Leaving Certificate Examination in 1970;

(2) College of the Immaculate Conception (C.I.C), Enugu from 1971 to 1975;

(3) University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife from 1975 to 1980;

(4) Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from 1982 to 1983; and

(5) Technical University of Nova Scotia (now Dalhousie University, Sexton Campus), Halifax NS Canada, from 1988 to 1992. He holds the following academic qualifications: B.Sc. (Hons.) Agricultural Engineering from University of Ife (1980), M.Eng. Water Resources and Environmental Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University (1983), and PhD Agricultural Engineering, specializing in Watershed Hydrology and Modeling, from Technical University of Nova Scotia (1992).
